Inside the 2018 Southern Living Idea House in Austin, TX

Actual SL Photo 3

Wellborn Cabinet recently visited the 2018 Southern Living Idea House located in Austin, Texas where we have enjoyed being a national sponsor with Southern Living on this annual project for many years.

Actual SL Photos 2  Actual SL Photos 1

At this annual event, the Southern Living team introduced the crew that made this project come to life. The home was made possible by so many brilliant individuals, including architect Christopher Sanders of Sanders Architecture; builder David Wilkes of David Wilkes Builders; and designer Meredith Ellis of Meredith Ellis Design. Wellborn Cabinet, and many other companies who made this project possible, got a sneak peak of the home before it was open to the public. Wellborn Cabinet was honored to be a national sponsor of the home and visit the rustic hills for an up close and personal tour of the home.

Through this post, I would like to (try) and provide you, the reader, with a digital tour of the home and of course, highlight some of the stunning features.

Positioned atop the Northwest Hills in Texas the home features adequate privacy for entertainment and enough closeness to the big city of Austin for its exuberant culture. Upon entering the home, one can’t help but notice the differing patterns and colors; some bold and eccentric, others soft and earthy. After taking in the vibrant color palette and open foyer, the guest bedroom and guest bathroom begin to grab the attention of all who enter.

The guest bathroom is embellished with an exquisite patterned wallpaper, which gives this space a traditional southern plantation vibe. The bathroom is finished with Wellborn’s Premier cabinetry line (Non-beaded Inset, Davenport Square door style featured in Maple). These cabinets are showcased in a Glacier finish. The guest bedroom is painted a rustic, burnt orange and decorated with a plethora of old horse photographs and patterned curtains. The orange tone gives this space a relaxed vibe, a place you’d love to be a guest at.

The dining room is dimly lit, which accents the green perfectly. The dining table is strategically decorated tying this room together.

In the heart of the home, with the everything’s-bigger-in-Texas persona, the kitchen certainly has the compacity to entertain many guests. In the south, hospitality is a value that is paramount above all else. The large island and top-to-bottom cabinetry adds storage and help fill the space as well. The cabinets featured in the kitchen are a part of Wellborn’s Premier cabinetry line (Inset, Henlow Square door style featured in Maple). The cabinetry is showcased in Repose Gray (Sherwin Williams 7015). The large lantern fixtures and massive window provides enough light making each and every color pop off of it’s canvas.

The pantry is off the kitchen, next to the laundry room. It is incased in Wellborn Cabinet’s Premier cabinetry line (Inset, Henlow Square door style featured in Maple). The cabinetry is dressed in Repose Gray (Sherwin Williams 7015). The gray tones in the backsplash and countertop give this area the pop it needs.

The next room we move to is the laundry room, which is again dressed from top-to-bottom in Wellborn Cabinetry. Again, the Premier line covers the laundry room (Inset, Hanover door style featured in Maple). The cabinetry is in Bleu. The dark tones allow for frequent traffic and hide fingerprints very well. Highlighting another feature in this space, is the pet bowls that pull out with the touch of your foot.

The sitting room, off of the kitchen/living room, is glowing from the sunlight window. This area is glowingly white and modern with vibrant patterns. The natural light bounces off the white walls and white cabinetry which leads you into the hidden powder bath. The bath is completed with Wellborn’s Premier line once again (Fillers and Molding, featured in Maple). Again, this bath is finished in Repose Gray (Sherwin Williams 7015).

The master bedroom is on the back of the house, in it’s own cozy corner. It’s perfect for morning coffee and catching up on the family gossip with a loved one. The cozy master bedroom is accompanied by a massive bathroom with a quaint vintage clawfoot tub, that screams old south. This bathroom has a his and her vanity from Wellborn Cabinet. This vanity is from Wellborn’s Premier cabinetry line (featured in Davenport Square Full Over Lay door style and made in Maple).  Going further into the master bath, you are greeted by a gigantic marble tiled shower and a linen cabinet. This linen cabinet is from our Premier line as well, with the Davenport Square Full Over Lay door style. All the cabinetry in this master is finished in Glacier finish.

IMG_1751IMG_1753

The stairs in the foyer are wooden with a sisal runner rug draped over them, allowing for continuous traffic and no wear and tear. At the top of the stairs you are welcomed with an immaculate mural swathed in rich green tones, which ties the foyer and dining room together. The first bedroom off the stairs is a blush pink bedroom with wall-to-wall pink wallpaper, pink doors, and pink bedding. Again, the Texan personality of “go big or go home” is the style foundation of this room. This abundantly pink room is my personal favorite! The bathroom nook is decorated with antique pieces. The bench seat is from Wellborn’s Estate cabinetry line (Non-Beaded Inset, Wellington door style and made in Maple). This bench seat is predictably finished in Pink Shadow (Sherwin Williams 0070).

IMG_1744 IMG_1746

Moving across the hall, the “twin” room is dressed in ship-lap material on the ceiling to give this space a tucked away, attic feel. Although this room has twin beds, it is sophisticated due to the vintage antiques and array of patterns. In this bathroom nook, there is a built-in dresser that helps bring in the many color schemes. This dresser is part of Wellborn’s Premier line (Non-Beaded Inset, Davenport door style and made in Cherry). The finish on the built-in is Blush Java (C-460).

On-Trend Transformations

Although they’re often the smallest rooms in the house, they’re also among the most essential and most commonly remodeled spaces. When you approach design with both function and style in mind, you can elevate your bathroom to be much more than an afterthought.

While the bathroom is a space where function matters greatly, that’s no reason to skip adding personal touches to the space. From fixtures and decor that reflect your personality to accessories and features that fit your lifestyle, you can incorporate details that make your bathroom as much about you as the rest of your home.

The focal point of many bathrooms is the cabinetry, and the array of products available today make it possible to create nearly any look you can imagine. With an option such as Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s Elegant Bath Collection, the possibilities are endless. The extensive collection of designer vanity suites, basic vanities and accessories fits a broad range of design aesthetics with an array of popular door styles and finishes.

If a remodel is in your plans, consider these in-the-now design trends to help create a bathroom retreat that blends your individual style with everyday luxury.

Contemporary style

Whether it’s a desire to capture the classic Zen spa style at home or simply a growing penchant for modern interiors, the bathroom is no exception for those who gravitate toward contemporary design. Cabinetry featuring clean styles, sleek hardware and full overlay doors lend well to a contemporary look. Add complementary lighting and fixtures, and keep accessories and decor simple and clutter-free to round out the look.

Painted cabinetry

Many a bathroom has fallen victim to monochromatic monotony. Fortunately, these days more bathrooms are getting a fresh look filled with colorful expression. If you’ve considered the cabinetry off-limits before, now is the time to brighten up your bathroom and make a statement with boldly hued woodwork. For a more subtle look, glazed richly toned stains may be the answer. Take another step toward this color-friendly style with neutral painted finishes and paints with glazes. Or go all-in with fully custom painted cabinetry, with Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s ColorInspire program, that draws from the broad selection of shades from the extensive paint programs of well-known brands such as Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore and Valspar.

Floating vanities

In keeping with the trend toward modern motifs, floating vanities provide a clean, minimalistic appearance in a contemporary design. Particularly in a smaller room, this open, airy look is a stylish alternative to the pedestal sink as it lends an illusion of space while bringing expanded flooring into view. Paired with the proper cabinetry and color scheme, the floating vanity can work equally well in a transitional design.

Storage solutions

From pull-outs, tilt-ups and roll-outs to hidden outlets, simplified storage is in big demand, according to the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s 2016 Design Trends Report. Keeping clutter off the counter is easier than ever with clever storage solutions such as Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s accessory base pullouts or toe kick drawers that create an extra place to stow your bath essentials in the space below the cabinet. Another solution to a common problem, the U-shaped sliding shelf wraps around the sink plumbing to hold towels, soaps and hair accessories, providing easy access to stored items while maximizing storage space inside your vanity.

Choose Your Door Design

The type of door overlay you choose for your bathroom cabinetry can make a big difference in the overall look of the room. Determine which door style fits best with your design:

Full overlay doors span over the frame and have a concealed hinge for a clean look.

Traditional overlay doors reveal some of the frame for a classic design.

Inset doors are placed inside the cabinet frame. Some brands, such as Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., offer options like beaded or non-beaded face frames.

Shades of Gray

The year 2015 has struck the market with the color trend gray. The “new neutral” can be seen anywhere from hairstyles on women under the age of 65, to the interior of homes. Many designers prefer to use bolder colors in homes; therefore, they can blend in the gray to help tone down the brightness of the different colors. Gray is a good color to incorporate with statement colors in the living room or kitchen because it acts as a neutralizer. Gray has been found in all types of homes: modern, traditional, contemporary, eclectic and rustic and has become a prominent trend in the kitchen and bath industry. Wellborn offers two gray paint colors with optional glazes to enhance the cabinetry.

Gray is considered the color of intellect, knowledge, and wisdom. It is perceived as long-lasting, classic, and often as sleek or refined. Gray is controlled and inconspicuous. Considered to be a color of compromise, perhaps because it sits between the extremes of black and white. Gray is a perfect neutral, which is why designers often use it as a background color or on cabinetry. Do you think gray is here to stay? If so, which of the colors above would you choose?

It's Fall Y'all!

Fall, Fire place, family, kitchen, home, leaves, s’mores, cabinetry

The crisp air is swarming in, the leaves are changing colors, and days are getting shorter. Football is the first thing we think of on a Saturday morning, and the smell of pumpkin enriches our morning coffee. Fall is here!

The time is near and dear that we bring the family back into the kitchen for some tricky Halloween treats or festive Thanksgiving meals. Keep the warm fall feel, throughout the year, by combining the muted colors of fall into your kitchen through cabinetry. Take a look at some of the fall inspired colors we offer here at Wellborn Cabinet, Inc.

Apple Crisp

The red, cherry wood brings out the color of the leaves as they ever so gracefully fall off the trees and lay peacefully on the cool, damp ground. The island is finished off with a caramel java stain with a glaze. The maple wood with a sage mocha finish seems to fill the air with the smell of maple syrup drizzling out from the trees.

Apple Crisp

Coffee Bliss

The espresso finish warms the room and complements the smell of coffee on an early weekday morning. The lower lighting produces an amber glow that stirs in the pumpkin colors that are screaming for excitement as family and friends gather around the island ready for pumpkin carving and painting.

Coffee Bliss

S’mores Galore

As the night comes to a close, gather around the fireplace while the rich sable finish on the cabinetry sets the mood for a warm evening full of marshmallow roasting, s’mores making and festive movie watching family time. Fall is bringing the family back into the home where it all started.

How To: Turn Your Inspiration Into Reality Through Color

Inspiration touches everyone. This blog is about ways to incorporate that inspiration through color in your own home.

You don’t have to be an artist to be inspired. Inspiration actually happens in real everyday life for everyone, if the time is taken to acknowledge it.

ColorInsipre

Step 1: Discover your inspiration.

Maybe your inspiration comes from something sentimental such as your grandmothers kitchen wallpaper that you spent hours looking at while helping her bake your favorite pie. Maybe it stems from nature such as the ocean or a flower that you watch bloom every spring. It could be something as simple as a bright red front door on a house that you pass everyday going to work. Whatever your inspiration is rooted from, there are ways to bring it to life in your own home.

Step 2: Choose where to display.

Inspiration can be displayed in all kinds of ways throughout a home. It can be as extreme as a wall color or cabinet color and as minor as a few small decorations. If you are really inspired, maybe give a room a motif to carry out your inspiration through several details. Craft rooms, offices, kitchens, and bathrooms are a few rooms that are perfect for inspiration. A wonderful example of inspiration put to use in a little girl’s bathroom is the shown below.

Color911 - Cabinets Wellborn.com Salmon small

Step 3: Choose a color.

When choosing a color, it is important to pick something that won’t get old fast. This may be easier said than done considering even the brightest of colors are exciting for the first few months. If you have any doubts about such dramatic change, start small. Pull the color into the design through small details. Sometimes an accent wall will do the trick. Sometimes it’s okay to go over the top with color. After choosing a location, decide the color and how much of it you want displayed. Below are a few ways that color can be minimal or maximal.  Basically, if you love it, go for it.

Beach themed houses are characterized by the color you see when you walk in. This coastal kitchen piece shown below is sure to catch every eye.

Set7_1
The beaded board back panel of the hutch in the center of the wall is painted a beautiful blue. When put together with the other two furniture pieces, you can really see how accents are a perfect way to display colors and inspiration.

Step 4: Do it and Enjoy it.

Make your inspiration happen! After making all of the decisions, it is time to get to work. After the process is complete, sit back and look at the masterpiece and story that you have created.

Wellborn Cabinet, Inc.’s ColorInspire Program allows you to choose from the color decks of Benjamin Moore, Valspar, and Sherwin Williams. With this program, the possibilities are endless! Click here to start turning your inspirations into a colorful reality by finding a Wellborn dealer near you!

Define Your Unique Style

When thinking about your dream kitchen, what type of cabinets come to mind?

Is it rich dark stained cherry wood?

Maybe it is a clean crisp white paint?

Do you picture yourself having a rustic kitchen complemented by different techniques?

You are not defined by any specific design style and have the freedom to come up with your own. To some of us, that vision may still be undiscovered. Whatever your style, here are a couple of categories to help you determine the look you imagine your kitchen to have.

Stains

Green Haven Home Kitchen Perimeter: Hanover Beaded Inset Door Style in Maple with Evergreen stain and Java glaze Island: Hanover Beaded Inset Door Style in Cherry with an Espresso stain

Sometimes all a cabinet needs is a simple stain to allow the true beauty and character of the wood to shine through. Dark, medium and light tone stains each can create a completely different look depending on what they are paired with. Your style can contain a kitchen with all stained cabinets, or an island can be the perfect place for a stain to pop out amongst a beautiful paint color.

Paints

Hoffman Media Home Kitchen

You can’t go wrong with a paint. A timeless white or neutral is something that will catch everyone’s attention for the life of the cabinetry. Tired of playing it safe? Maybe a bright bold color is what you need to craft an environment created by your own inspiration.

Techniques

A number of techniques can be added to a cabinet to add character and a certain look. These techniques include rub through, spattering, burnishing, dry brushing, small dents, worm holes, carved edges, rasping and glazing. Each of these techniques create a unique, one of a kind look for cabinetry allowing your personality to shine.

Add a special touch

Aside from stains, techniques and paints, there are a number of different glazes that can be added to give detail to the cabinet design. Wellborn’s Brush Finish, a special application of Fawn glaze on top of a paint, is the perfect addition to any door style. Brush Finish is available on Glacier, Divinity, Crème and Vanilla. It gives the paint an overlay of a subtle brush stroke of glaze providing depth to the finish. This is accomplished by hand brushing each individual cabinet giving each a unique overall look.

Maybe it’s time to “Define your Unique Style.”

Antigua Baking Center: a must have for 2014

Every attendee that came into our booth at KBIS went straight for the big, bright doors on our baking set – it’s like our designer Karen Salyer could read minds at this years KBIS show. People wanted to see something different but they also wanted something that felt authentic, nostalgic…….  a relatable design….. or maybe they just wanted to feel excitement about something they already loved… baking…..

Screen Shot 2014-02-20 at 9.55.49 AM

I personally love good design and with good design in a kitchen  – a cook can do wonders – your steps become almost that of a perfectly choreographed dance and you are the star  – with your extras (interior accessories planned perfectly) stealing the spotlight only for a few seconds here or there…. but in the Wellborn booth this year  – Antigua was the star.

An eye-catching exterior that beckons you to the beach or our booth  – the Antigua door style is a lovely faux louver style door but with Antigua there’s no faux style – it’s all real!
