Inside the 2018 Southern Living Idea House in Austin, TX

Actual SL Photo 3

Wellborn Cabinet recently visited the 2018 Southern Living Idea House located in Austin, Texas where we have enjoyed being a national sponsor with Southern Living on this annual project for many years.

At this annual event, the Southern Living team introduced the crew that made this project come to life. The home was made possible by so many brilliant individuals, including architect Christopher Sanders of Sanders Architecture; builder David Wilkes of David Wilkes Builders; and designer Meredith Ellis of Meredith Ellis Design. Wellborn Cabinet, and many other companies who made this project possible, got a sneak peak of the home before it was open to the public. Wellborn Cabinet was honored to be a national sponsor of the home and visit the rustic hills for an up close and personal tour of the home.

Through this post, I would like to (try) and provide you, the reader, with a digital tour of the home and of course, highlight some of the stunning features.

Positioned atop the Northwest Hills in Texas the home features adequate privacy for entertainment and enough closeness to the big city of Austin for its exuberant culture. Upon entering the home, one can’t help but notice the differing patterns and colors; some bold and eccentric, others soft and earthy. After taking in the vibrant color palette and open foyer, the guest bedroom and guest bathroom begin to grab the attention of all who enter.

IMG_1755

The guest bathroom is embellished with an exquisite patterned wallpaper, which gives this space a traditional southern plantation vibe. The bathroom is finished with Wellborn’s Premier cabinetry line (Non-beaded Inset, Davenport Square door style featured in Maple). These cabinets are showcased in a Glacier finish. The guest bedroom is painted a rustic, burnt orange and decorated with a plethora of old horse photographs and patterned curtains. The orange tone gives this space a relaxed vibe, a place you’d love to be a guest at.

The dining room is dimly lit, which accents the green perfectly. The dining table is strategically decorated tying this room together.

In the heart of the home, with the everything’s-bigger-in-Texas persona, the kitchen certainly has the compacity to entertain many guests. In the south, hospitality is a value that is paramount above all else. The large island and top-to-bottom cabinetry adds storage and help fill the space as well. The cabinets featured in the kitchen are a part of Wellborn’s Premier cabinetry line (Inset, Henlow Square door style featured in Maple). The cabinetry is showcased in Repose Gray (Sherwin Williams 7015). The large lantern fixtures and massive window provides enough light making each and every color pop off of it’s canvas.

The pantry is off the kitchen, next to the laundry room. It is incased in Wellborn Cabinet’s Premier cabinetry line (Inset, Henlow Square door style featured in Maple). The cabinetry is dressed in Repose Gray (Sherwin Williams 7015). The gray tones in the backsplash and countertop give this area the pop it needs.

The next room we move to is the laundry room, which is again dressed from top-to-bottom in Wellborn Cabinetry. Again, the Premier line covers the laundry room (Inset, Hanover door style featured in Maple). The cabinetry is in Bleu. The dark tones allow for frequent traffic and hide fingerprints very well. Highlighting another feature in this space, is the pet bowls that pull out with the touch of your foot.

The sitting room, off of the kitchen/living room, is glowing from the sunlight window. This area is glowingly white and modern with vibrant patterns. The natural light bounces off the white walls and white cabinetry which leads you into the hidden powder bath. The bath is completed with Wellborn’s Premier line once again (Fillers and Molding, featured in Maple). Again, this bath is finished in Repose Gray (Sherwin Williams 7015).

The master bedroom is on the back of the house, in it’s own cozy corner. It’s perfect for morning coffee and catching up on the family gossip with a loved one. The cozy master bedroom is accompanied by a massive bathroom with a quaint vintage clawfoot tub, that screams old south. This bathroom has a his and her vanity from Wellborn Cabinet. This vanity is from Wellborn’s Premier cabinetry line (featured in Davenport Square Full Over Lay door style and made in Maple).  Going further into the master bath, you are greeted by a gigantic marble tiled shower and a linen cabinet. This linen cabinet is from our Premier line as well, with the Davenport Square Full Over Lay door style. All the cabinetry in this master is finished in Glacier finish.

The stairs in the foyer are wooden with a sisal runner rug draped over them, allowing for continuous traffic and no wear and tear. At the top of the stairs you are welcomed with an immaculate mural swathed in rich green tones, which ties the foyer and dining room together. The first bedroom off the stairs is a blush pink bedroom with wall-to-wall pink wallpaper, pink doors, and pink bedding. Again, the Texan personality of “go big or go home” is the style foundation of this room. This abundantly pink room is my personal favorite! The bathroom nook is decorated with antique pieces. The bench seat is from Wellborn’s Estate cabinetry line (Non-Beaded Inset, Wellington door style and made in Maple). This bench seat is predictably finished in Pink Shadow (Sherwin Williams 0070).

IMG_1744 IMG_1746

Moving across the hall, the “twin” room is dressed in ship-lap material on the ceiling to give this space a tucked away, attic feel. Although this room has twin beds, it is sophisticated due to the vintage antiques and array of patterns. In this bathroom nook, there is a built-in dresser that helps bring in the many color schemes. This dresser is part of Wellborn’s Premier line (Non-Beaded Inset, Davenport door style and made in Cherry). The finish on the built-in is Blush Java (C-460).

Remodel: Old World Artisan by Tukasa Creations

Don’t you just love a good, jaw-dropping, breath-taking kitchen remodel? I know we sure do. Today, we want to share a kitchen that took on an incredible makeover leaving the space not only gorgeous but also more functional and practical to accommodate all of the family’s needs.

Background:

Located in the beautiful area of Corpus Christi, Texas the home was a new purchase that was within only a few hundred feet from the bay. Although the location was outstanding, there were a few not so wonderful features. The kitchen was outdated with a layout that was far from pleasing to the new homeowners making it an area that they wanted to focus on. Because it felt boxed in, the plan was to open up the space to fit their needs.

The homeowners wanted a rustic, old world look for the kitchen, which was brought in through the finish techniques on the cabinetry and the Saltillo floor-part of the home’s roots.

Before:

The kitchen use to be surrounded by a wall with walk-in pantries, but it was not accessible and left the homeowners with not enough space. This outdated and unappealing kitchen was ready for a huge change.

After:

To fix the problem of the pantry being inaccessible, pantry storage was added into the kitchen cabinetry. Removing the pantry wall allowed for a more open and welcoming design.

The homeowners love to entertain and have children, so they are always hosting guests! This is why such a large island was incorporated into the design. Another reason for the large island is because they wanted a large work zone. The husband loves to cook, so he wanted a sink and stove in the same vicinity for functional food prep space.

The combination of two cabinet door styles partnered with a dark stain and added detail through a finish technique is what makes this kitchen such a standout. The base cabinets are Wellborn’s Premier Series Rose Hall Square and the Wall cabinets are Wellborn’s Premier Series Rose Hall Arch. The cabinetry is Maple and finished with a Sienna stain and Charcoal glaze. Character is added to the cabinetry with an Olde World finish technique which consists of burnishing, rub thru, small dents, worm holes, dry brush glazing, carved edges, medium dents and rasping.

Whole Home Design Solutions

Whole Home Design Solutions is a way to use cabinetry throughout the home in ways that may seem unconventional. Cabinetry provides storage and beautiful aesthetics while lasting.

Whole Home Design Solutions

What room in your house do you need storage in? How about which ROOMS in your house do you need storage in? Maybe a better questions is what room don’t you need storage in? Let’s face it, there needs to be some type of storage in every room of the home.

Cabinetry is a long term storage solution that just happens to be beautiful at the same time. With Whole Home Design Solutions, your cabinetry can be cohesive throughout your entire house while providing storage solutions for a lifetime. Let’s take a look at the different rooms that cabinetry transforms into a functional masterpiece.

Mudrooms

Upon entering your home, you need a place to hang jackets, sort mail, lay your keys, and take your shoes off. Proper storage in the mudroom is crucial to prevent cluttering the rest of the home with daily items.

Bedrooms

Everyone needs storage in his or her bedroom. Kids need a place to store toys and adults need a place to display memories through pictures and souvenirs. Storage like what is shown below is perfect for all ages and adds value to the home.

Closets

Have you ever bought a new shirt at the end of summer because it was on sale? Then you put it away for next summer, and when summer rolls around you have forgotten all about it because you can’t find it in your monster of a closet? Yeah, me too. Closets are one space that need storage and organization… and LOTS of it! Check out these closets below. Which one would you choose for your own?

Craftrooms

We all need our own unique space to get away! For some, that space is a craft room!

MBS1_MPL_SND_72M

Garages

Men, here is a space for you, too! Storage in the garage can often become cluttered, but with cabinetry like this, it is easy to give every tool its own place!

Offices

Home offices most definitely ALWAYS need storage and organization. A beautiful home office may even help with a little inspiration. Give your home office a touch of your own personality!

Bathrooms

One common thing that all bathrooms share is the need for storage. Why not make them look fabulous at the same time? These are both two needs for every bathroom. What good is a bathroom if it looks great but lacks storage?

Laundry Rooms

Laundry room organization is crucial to actually keeping the laundry clean! Why not make it beautiful as well?

Entertainment/Living Rooms

Cabinetry provides the perfect storage for media, books, and decorations! Also, it alone can transform the look of a living area. Take a look below at how two different cabinetry finishes pull together the look of the room.

Echelon14_24_MDS_MPL_CML-GLR_72M

Dining Rooms

Being able to have cabinetry in the dining room allows you to match it to the kitchen! With the trend to have open spaces, using coordinating cabinetry in the kitchen and dining room really pulls everything together.

Pantries

A pantry can be designed to be strictly a pantry, or it can be designed to do a little more. Check out these pantries below. Do you like the idea of having a breakfast area/bar in the pantry? Or, do you like a pantry to be only a room for storing items such as canned goods, food, etc.?

Kitchens

With so many sizes and styles, the possibilities are endless!

Pacific Northwest CabinetryMilwaukie, Oregon

This is the 3rd project we were asked to do for this couple. We had helped them with their kitchen – and
now their pantry was in dire need of help. It had become a catch all for various items that didn’t quite have
a place in the main kitchen and consequently had become almost useless. We were tasked with cleaning out
and organizing the space, adding storage and function to this underutilized space

before

Problems/Challenges:
-Very cluttered, everything was shoved into place and very visible
-They wanted this to be an area that could house a microwave and second oven for overflow cooking during
the holidays
-Wanted an area to house his espresso maker and accoutrement since it didn’t fit in the kitchen
-Wanted a sink for quick access to water and an extra place to clean up
-Wanted a space for bottle storage up and out of the way
-Lacked any kind of countertop space at all so no real work could be done in the space
-Didn’t want it to look too dark or heavy
-Their existing door swung into the pantry, making it hard to maneuver inside

Picture8

Picture7

after

Solutions:
-Added enclosed cabinet storage with Wellborn’s Prairie Maple Painted in the Divinity finish. Giving the
pantry a bright feel overall
-Bookcases that sit on the countertop provide open storage for a tight space. Clear mason jars provide an
attractive and functional way to store them
-A sink was added at the end of the pantry under the window, right next to the espresso and coffee makers
-An unused chimney was removed and recessed in the space we installed a new convection microwave and
second oven. Giving them plenty of extra cook space and getting it out of the way and off the countertop
-A shelf was added running along the kitchen wall to house their bottle storage where it won’t take up space
used by everyday items
-Added granite that matched their kitchen for a cohesive look
-Changed the door to a pocket door and added glass for a more open look and more light
