Problem: A kitchen that didn’t function well for entertaining. If you sat at the island, guest could
not maneuver behind you. The breakfast nook was small and could only house two and it also
blocked the view of the water. Client had a challenge with refrigerator location, when you
opened the door, she would hit the kitchen chair.
Solution: We removed the breakfast nook and squared of the back of the house, we removed the
exterior wall opposite the bar area and extended the kitchen 4 feet into the covered lanai.

Problem: One entrance two and from kitchen thus preventing a flow for entertaining; and also preventing lighting from entering the kitchen.
Solution: We created an opening between the kitchen and dining area, to allow for cross lighting,
and it allowed for a better flow for entertaining When we went into the covered lanai we also
gained two feet to widen the current entrance from 26 inches to 40. This helped immensely.

Problem: Client was downsizing from a 6,000 house into a 2600 sq ft zero lot line home on the
water way. She was so concerned with the lack of cabinetry storage.

Solution: The exterior wall that we bumped out allowed us to have a larger walk way for a bar as
well as it created an extra 18 inches. We designed a cabinet that was reduced depth that would
house her cook books, designer glass wear and serving platters for entertaining.

Problem: Client wanted china hutch but the view of the waterway was so spectacular and were I
placed the kitchen sink caused a problem with her viewing a wall or cabinets.
Solution: I designed a wall that allowed for access to the water view and storage. I ordered
peninsula cabinets void the glass doors on the back. Installed plexi glass on the back and placed
the cabinets over a frameless window. Now, the client has storage and a view.

James Stratton is a Dream Kitchen Designer and Design Winner

James Stratton of DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen is a Dream Kitchen Designer and a Wellborn Design Winner!

James entered his “Townhome Treasure” in the (Large Kitchen (>42 sq ft of Countertops) Type: Remodel) Category and won.

We are proud to share his work with you! Enjoy the images and his design statement below.

When you walked into this Townhome you were faced with an outdated and cramped kitchen.

Before 001

before

Before 003

The customer wanted her guests to be greeted by a bright, “up to date” space which incorporated a warm classic style.

Now, as you enter this townhome you are drawn into the sophisticated, modern kitchen with its touch of European styling.

The diminutive space and placing of skylights made opening the kitchen difficult. By expanding the room into the laundry room both obstacles were overcome. The washer and dryer had to be placed inside the kitchen which created a blemish to the design.

By “hiding” the washer and dryer behind matching Wellborn cabinetry customized bi-fold doors, a balance and continuity was established which ultimately contributed to the design of this space.

With the extensive choices of door styles and accessories that Wellborn offers, cabinets that were oak and ordinary were replaced by Monterey Maple Cabinetry finished in Glacier. This made a homely kitchen come to life with sophistication and warmth.

White tile countertops were replaced with beautiful granite.

granite

Using the colors in the granite a distinctive backsplash in a three-dimensional design was an artful addition, a pleasing change from the plain blue and white tile backsplash that existed before.

The design of the workspace is redefined by changing a closed “u” to a more open design.

The island has an elegant 6cm OG round over edge, giving prominence to the black granite composite under mount sink.

The heated tile floor provided a literal warmth which allowed the customer to function a little easier on those cold winter mornings, as opposed to the vinyl floor which existed before.

Recessed lighting, classy pendants and natural skylights created general and task lighting which made
a dreary kitchen more brilliant and workable, and added to the panache of the design.
Attention to detail was followed all the way down to the hardware on the cabinet doors in a collaboration of different
styles.

This created a customized look, which the client loved!

Our Emerald "Color of the Year" Tribute

As Pantone unveiled their 2013 Color of the Year – we just had to research Emerald and see what others are doing and how we can jump “on board” the Emerald Express.
So our tribute to “Emerald” begins: we searched through the pages of  Pinterest and Houzz  to find spaces and products where Emerald provides simple bursts of renewed energy or is intelligently positioned through-out an entire space to create the Wow that your space was needing!
Emerald truly can be a chameleon of spaces from the elegant decor of dining rooms of old to vintage basement retreats created for fun-filled weekends. We don’t even begin to address clothing, make-up or other industries outside of fashion…. 🙂
Emerald can be your theme….simple to dynamic…. Emerald truly answers the “color call” this year!
(pay attention to the others as well…..)
Houzz is alive with the evolution of Emerald! Can’t wait to see all the new additions for 2013!

When the owners built their vacation home in 2009, they wanted to add modern touches while still remaining true to the home’s location on the family’s farm in the country.

The design of the cabinetry complements the house’s Craftsman style with massive posts and arching beams.

The selected finishes of painted sage green and distressed midnight black are true to the design and add to the “lived – in” quality.

The one of a kind characteristics come not just from the cabinet style, but also from the bead board, seeded glass door inserts and carved turnings.

The hammered copper sinks with reverse-hammered stars add to the natural theme.

The layout is very user friendly, while still excellent for family dinners and entertaining with the curved raised seating area.

Random distressed wood plank flooring, iron cabinet pulls, 2×2 slate mosaic backsplash, timber beamed wood ceiling, and natural stone countertops are true to the architecture of the home.

The industrial lighting and professional style stainless steel Thermador range top, Thermador double ovens, and Sharp microwave drawer add to the home’s modernized appeal.

Other appliances are fully integrated and hidden behind matching wood cabinet panels. These include the Thermador 36” French door refrigerator, warming drawer and dual dishwashers.

The intelligent mix of modern and past elements create a timeless space to be shared and loved by all for years to come! Breath-taking work Bob!
