Ways to Make Your Bathroom Look Bigger Through Cabinets and Storage

The bathroom is many people’s comfort zones. Evidently, it will not be called comfort rooms if it is not. Many prefer this part of the home to be as spacious as possible, but, the reality is, most often than not, this room compensates to the lack thereof.

Fret not! You don’t really need to knock down some walls to expand the room. One of the most common techniques—and the most functional one too: proper cabinet and storage placement.

Here are some tips for your mind to think your bathroom is bigger than what it really is:

Choose/Paint the cabinet doors monochromatic with the lightest shade possible.

Following the theme of your bathroom, choose cabinets that goes and blends in mono-chromatically. If it’s possible, go with the lightest shade possible. The color white (or light colors) reflects light, be it natural light from the sun or supplied by lighting fixtures. If the light touch cabinet surfaces, it will bounce back, making the room seem brighter, hence bigger and more spacious. If you want to trick your mind into thinking that your bathroom is actually bigger, install white tiles, paint your walls and your ceilings white.

If you have wooden cabinetry, opt for using lighter woods as opposed to dark colored woods.  A light colored wood will allow for more light to reflect off of surfaces and will not make the room look more cramped than it already is.

Stay with the same tone and color.

If white is not your thing, you can choose any color to paint your bathroom. But, keep in mind that the lighter it is the better it would be for the illusion of a much spacious room. Try to keep the decor in one shade. According to experts, painting everything with a unifying color will make those unusual shapes disappear, and the space will visually expand. “It cuts down on the number of transitions and planes intersecting, therefore creating a cleaner, more expansive upper space in the room,” they advise.

Keep in mind, though, that even monochromatic dark shades will make your bathroom look smaller, so going as light as possible is the best way to go.

Place cabinets strategically.

Think of the spaces in your bathroom that you don’t usually go to—say for example, above the doorway. Typically, the space above a doorway is vacant.  Especially, if you have higher ceilings than the minimum clearance you can install decorative storage shelves to house bath tub salts, scrubs etc. You can also use the shelf for storing extra toilet paper and cleaners to free up valuable storage area below the sink

Maximize vertical space.

Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. – Elegant Bath Collection

Consider having cabinetry built to extend up to the ceiling. Adding color at a vertical height will cause the eye to go up and therefore enlarge the bathroom space and feel. It is also a wise use of the space above head, which will not make you feel cramped inside the bathroom.

Consider open storage cabinets.

Open storage shelves trick the mind that it is not occupying as much space as possible, because the eyes see what’s beneath it. At the same time, it allows owners to use it as a display rack, as well as to keep the necessities in a decorative manner. But, keep in mind that if you decide on open storage for your bathroom, you should be mindful of clutter and adding too many items on the shelves.

A Guide To Choosing The Right Door Style For You

Recessed panel door styles, often referred to as Shaker, are one of the most popular cabinet styles.  Loved by many homeowners because of its simple clean lines and sharp squared edges. Wellborn Cabinet has the perfect door to suit this style “Prairie”, which transcends all 3 Wellborn Cabinet series: Select, Premier, and Estate.  It is available in a multitude of wood species, stain colors, and painted finishes. This door style comes with a slab style drawer front for the purist approach and more modern look, but Wellborn Cabinet does give you the option to change the drawer front to a five-piece configuration consisting of recessed center panel. Therefore the drawer and door would come in the same profiling for a seamless classic look.

One advantage of the Prairie door style is that it blends in perfectly for almost all types of decors. Whether you have a classic country kitchen, an airy farmhouse kitchen or a modern chic bathroom, this cabinet will fit right in. Change the wood species to Oak or Hickory for distinct texture and graining, providing a welcome transition from the surrounding surfaces.

Paints and Stains

Recessed panel door styles, like the Prairie, Hancock, Bristol and Bishop to name a few, come in a wide variety of painted, stained, and glazed color hues to choose from. However, if you have your heart set on that special paint color, then no need to worry because Color Inspire is the custom paint program just for you. If Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore or Valspar makes it, you can get it.  Creating endless possibilities for the perfect space to be yourself.  Color plays a major role in the style of the space, so discover the choices offered.  Glacier white is an especially popular color right now, but don’t be surprised to see painted Bleu and Willow or stained Drift and Shadow for those island accents.  A paint finish allows the cabinet to retain its timeless classic style. The only downside is hairline cracks showing up at the joinery, over time as the wood shrinks and expands.

Finish Techniques

Wellborn Cabinet offers 8 different finish techniques that can be applied to the cabinetry to give it that special touch in completing the overall look of the space. Antiqued is cabinetry aged with care.  Its features include rub through on the corners, small dents and worm holes, and burnishing.  Cottage enhances the cozy country charm by adding splatter marks.  Seaside feels light and breezy on painted finishes with burnishing to the corners and dry brushing with Slate glaze. These finishes give the cabinet a slightly stressed and aged finish. The wood goes through a sanding process after which a special glaze is applied on the surface. Because of the added steps involved in techniques, you can expect to pay a slight up charge to achieve the look.

Alternatively, we are seeing less use of the Thermofoil door styles, like Nantucket and Newport, since painted finished have become more popular. A high-quality foil is pressed to a MDF substrate under intense heat.  The resulting cabinet has a light texture and is very durable.  Thermofoil cabinets are best for the bathroom because they can withstand high-moisture environments. The risk with using them in the kitchen is damage from heat. The foil tends to yellow when exposed to prolonged use of heat.

Finally, there is 24 -step superb finishing process, called Wellguard, that all stained doors and drawer fronts are subject too.  From hand selecting the finest woods to start, hand applied stain, 3 coats of sealer, all baked-on with a UV curing/ drying process.  Wellborn Cabinet takes great pride and care with the finishing of their wood products to ensure a superior product.  The process has been tested against 17 common household chemicals and food products with the long-lasting results.

Choose Your Style

Whether it is the kitchen, bathroom or bedroom, your choice in cabinetry will greatly determine the resulting overall room style. Consider carefully the door style, color and finish you choose for your cabinetry. T

5 Home Improvement Projects That Pay Off Big

Not all home improvement projects will reward your time and money equally. While some may pay back big dividends, other remodels could actually reduce the resale value of your home. Choose to make enhancements which are highly sought-after by buyers, so they’ll confer the added benefit of raising the market value of your property.

Consider the five home improvements we recommend below if you’re keen on turning your home into an even better investment.

  1. Front Door Finesse

When prospective buyers check out your building, they can’t help but notice the front door. Installing a new, steel door will not only make the premises seem more attractive, but it will also strengthen your home’s overall security. You may be able to boost the energy efficiency of your house with a new unit as well because old doors tend to leak air through crevices in the molding or the actual material of the door itself.

  1. Keep the Kitchen Current

Most people spend a lot of time in their kitchens preparing food, eating meals and just hanging out with their close friends and family. Therefore remodeling the kitchen space is something many homeowners put at the top of their list.

Depending upon budget, you can start off small with new sink faucets, lights and appliances. If you have the budget to do more, consider new cabinetry. Updating cabinetry has proven as a solid investment when remodeling your home. A beautiful kitchen is a surefire way to boost the enjoyment you get from your home as well its overall resale value.

  1. Siding Replacement

Just as your front door sets the tone for anyone who enters your house, so does siding for anyone who looks at your building from the outside. Today’s siding solutions often come with lifetime guarantees, so you’ll get a long-lasting upgrade to your home’s exterior when you spring for new siding. Siding doesn’t demand much maintenance, and it serves as a protective layer atop the outdoor surfaces of your house.

  1. Boost Your Home’s IQ

The features now possible with would have seemed farfetched just a few short years ago. From lights that turn themselves on and off to wireless thermostats that “remember” to regulate temperatures, smart home technology can make your residence more comfortable and more responsive to your needs. They also cater to security-related concerns, because with the addition of a video surveillance system or doorbell camera, you’ll be able to see who comes to visit you before opening the door.

doorbell-cameras

These products are more affordable than they have been in the past, but it’s still important to choose equipment that’s secure and reliable; otherwise, the hassles of operating the machinery may in fact decrease the enthusiasm of potential purchasers.

  1. Deck or Patio Installation

Outdoor home improvements provide an expansion of your living spaces at a much lower cost than a custom addition would. With the right deck or patio, you can establish a location for enjoying nature without subjecting yourself to the full force of the elements. Their reasonable price tags and broad appeal among buyers of all kinds make decks and patios some of the most cost-effective ways of heightening the charm and allure of homes.

Almost everything you do to your property will have an effect – either positive or negative – on its market value. Select the home remodeling projects you embark with care, and you’ll thereby satisfy your wish to live in enviable surroundings while also setting yourself up to earn a nice profit when it’s time to sell.

On-Trend Transformations

Although they’re often the smallest rooms in the house, they’re also among the most essential and most commonly remodeled spaces. When you approach design with both function and style in mind, you can elevate your bathroom to be much more than an afterthought.

While the bathroom is a space where function matters greatly, that’s no reason to skip adding personal touches to the space. From fixtures and decor that reflect your personality to accessories and features that fit your lifestyle, you can incorporate details that make your bathroom as much about you as the rest of your home.

The focal point of many bathrooms is the cabinetry, and the array of products available today make it possible to create nearly any look you can imagine. With an option such as Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s Elegant Bath Collection, the possibilities are endless. The extensive collection of designer vanity suites, basic vanities and accessories fits a broad range of design aesthetics with an array of popular door styles and finishes.

Contemporary style

Whether it’s a desire to capture the classic Zen spa style at home or simply a growing penchant for modern interiors, the bathroom is no exception for those who gravitate toward contemporary design. Cabinetry featuring clean styles, sleek hardware and full overlay doors lend well to a contemporary look. Add complementary lighting and fixtures, and keep accessories and decor simple and clutter-free to round out the look.

Painted cabinetry

Many a bathroom has fallen victim to monochromatic monotony. Fortunately, these days more bathrooms are getting a fresh look filled with colorful expression. If you’ve considered the cabinetry off-limits before, now is the time to brighten up your bathroom and make a statement with boldly hued woodwork. For a more subtle look, glazed richly toned stains may be the answer. Take another step toward this color-friendly style with neutral painted finishes and paints with glazes. Or go all-in with fully custom painted cabinetry, with Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s ColorInspire program, that draws from the broad selection of shades from the extensive paint programs of well-known brands such as Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore and Valspar.

Floating vanities

In keeping with the trend toward modern motifs, floating vanities provide a clean, minimalistic appearance in a contemporary design. Particularly in a smaller room, this open, airy look is a stylish alternative to the pedestal sink as it lends an illusion of space while bringing expanded flooring into view. Paired with the proper cabinetry and color scheme, the floating vanity can work equally well in a transitional design.

Storage solutions

From pull-outs, tilt-ups and roll-outs to hidden outlets, simplified storage is in big demand, according to the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s 2016 Design Trends Report. Keeping clutter off the counter is easier than ever with clever storage solutions such as Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s accessory base pullouts or toe kick drawers that create an extra place to stow your bath essentials in the space below the cabinet. Another solution to a common problem, the U-shaped sliding shelf wraps around the sink plumbing to hold towels, soaps and hair accessories, providing easy access to stored items while maximizing storage space inside your vanity.

Choose Your Door Design

The type of door overlay you choose for your bathroom cabinetry can make a big difference in the overall look of the room. Determine which door style fits best with your design:

Full overlay doors span over the frame and have a concealed hinge for a clean look.

Traditional overlay doors reveal some of the frame for a classic design.

Inset doors are placed inside the cabinet frame. Some brands, such as Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., offer options like beaded or non-beaded face frames.

Remodel: Tukasa Creations

From the hillsides to the valleys, a southern home shows beauty from the inside to the outside.

Travel down the beautiful countryside of Texas to explore the beauty of this kitchen. From beginning to end, this home was built off the style of the homeowner. As you scurry your way in, you will be welcomed by the amazing cabinetry that once only presented your basic brushed over white.

A southern style kitchen is built off the character of the homeowner, in which, the rooms mean more to them than a cooking location. This is a place that represents the woman behind the baking and cleaning. She is country meets glam. When asked what the lady wanted her home to represent she of course designed it based off her character. She took the reins on the blueprints and designed everything from the moldings to the style of cabinets that would be included in the construction.

Every home has a certain elegance and characteristic, but this Southern Charm wanted to modernize her kitchen but still keep the rustic/traditional appearance in the home. Tukasa Creations stayed true to the design envisioned by the homeowner but added a little twist to the rustic appeal by combining and transforming into the modern 21st century woman with a southern twang in the roots!

Dark cabinetry was envisioned in her mind, until she fell in love with the beautiful Glacier White Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. offers in our Premier Series. When remodeling takes place in the home, sometimes that means restructuring of the room. The oven was originally located where the pantry is placed now. The designers moved the oven to the other side to get it closer to the cooktop displayed on the gorgeous island. One addition to the kitchen, as well, was to make the pantry larger than normal. A pantry can never be too large to hold all your essential needs.

To represent this woman’s style, glass door fronts were installed in the cabinets so this lovely lady could display her turquoise, Fiesta dishware. One of the best qualities about choosing a white kitchen is the ability to intertwine with just about any color in the home. She wanted this possibility because as you can tell, she has an eye for fashion.

This woman is all about the details. To top of the elegant cabinetry, she wanted light rail molding below the upper cabinets and all base cabinets, as well as matching ends and fluted molding.

Aspire Cabinetry

There are three styles of kitchens: Contemporary, Traditional and Transitional. The choice of the style depends on the home owner’s budget and needs. Purchasing cabinetry is a big investment that will remain in the home for years. There are two main options when purchasing cabinetry: framed or frameless. For years, Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. only offered one of those options, but now the time has come to broaden our options in order to better fit our customers’ needs.

At KBIS 2016, Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. announced that we will be launching our new frameless line, Aspire Cabinetry, in 2017. Aspire will be a full access frameless cabinet brand that will help bring the contemporary, sleek look in the home. Frameless not only provides a modern look, but it can still provide a traditional style without having to add the extra frame on the cabinetry.

Framed vs. Frameless:

Framed cabinetry provides a more traditional and transitional style. For years, framed has always been the most popular style of cabinetry in the United States because of its endless options and durability. The trends have begun to shift and frameless cabinetry is now an option that most homeowners are considering. Wellborn offers endless options of framed cabinetry between our lines, Estate Collection, Premier Series, Select Series, Home Concepts and Elegant Bath Collection.

According to the name, frameless cabinetry is constructed without a face frame. Frameless cabinetry provides more storage and accessibility in a cabinet because it does not have a center stile coming down in the middle of the two cabinet doors. Also, drawers in frameless tend to have more storage space due to the lack of a face frame.

“Our new Aspire Full Access Frameless line is set to launch in 2017. With this addition to the many brands Wellborn offers, including, Wellborn Select and Premier Series, Estate, Closets and Elegant Bath Furniture line.” Angela O’Neill, Director of Marketing added, “Aspire adds the finishing touch to our product offering.”

Construction of Framed:

The standard face frame for the Wellborn doors are ¾” x 1 ¾” Kiln-dried solid wood stile and rail members. The center stiles are ¾” x 3 ½” solid wood. On all corner base and corner wall cabinets, the center stiles are ¾” x 6 ½” solid wood. 48” corner base has a 9 ½” center stile. All face frame joints are precisely aligned with blind mortise and tenon, glued and stapled at all joints.

Construction of Frameless:

Frameless cabinetry is constructed without the face frame located at the front of the cabinet. The logical reasoning behind this idea was to provide more room for accessibility and storage. The cabinet construction is ¾” thick thermofused melamine end panels, shelves, tops and cabinet bottoms. All the doors have a fully concealed Euro cup hinges with a six-way adjustability. The doors include a self-closing soft close feature, for that ever so quiet close. Wellborn Cabinet’s brand will offer two drawer options: a 5/8 solid wood dovetail drawer with natural finish and a double sided metal drawer with powder coated steel in silver color.

Frameless Pros:

Storage– Frameless cabinetry provides room for more storage due to the absence of the face frame.

Contemporary look-the European style cabinetry gives the home a more modern appeal

Quick Construction– The frameless cabinets provide a quicker construction and installation.

We have exciting plans for this brand, and we cannot wait to see where this takes us in the future. As we travel on this journey, we invite you to follow along as we introduce the Aspire Cabinetry line. We envision an incredible outcome for our company!

Shades of Gray

The year 2015 has struck the market with the color trend gray. The “new neutral” can be seen anywhere from hairstyles on women under the age of 65, to the interior of homes. Many designers prefer to use bolder colors in homes; therefore, they can blend in the gray to help tone down the brightness of the different colors. Gray is a good color to incorporate with statement colors in the living room or kitchen because it acts as a neutralizer. Gray has been found in all types of homes: modern, traditional, contemporary, eclectic and rustic and has become a prominent trend in the kitchen and bath industry. Wellborn offers two gray paint colors with optional glazes to enhance the cabinetry.

Gray is considered the color of intellect, knowledge, and wisdom. It is perceived as long-lasting, classic, and often as sleek or refined. Gray is controlled and inconspicuous. Considered to be a color of compromise, perhaps because it sits between the extremes of black and white. Gray is a perfect neutral, which is why designers often use it as a background color or on cabinetry. Do you think gray is here to stay? If so, which of the colors above would you choose?

Remodel: Old World Artisan by Tukasa Creations

Don’t you just love a good, jaw-dropping, breath-taking kitchen remodel? I know we sure do. Today, we want to share a kitchen that took on an incredible makeover leaving the space not only gorgeous but also more functional and practical to accommodate all of the family’s needs.

Background:

Located in the beautiful area of Corpus Christi, Texas the home was a new purchase that was within only a few hundred feet from the bay. Although the location was outstanding, there were a few not so wonderful features. The kitchen was outdated with a layout that was far from pleasing to the new homeowners making it an area that they wanted to focus on. Because it felt boxed in, the plan was to open up the space to fit their needs.

The homeowners wanted a rustic, old world look for the kitchen, which was brought in through the finish techniques on the cabinetry and the Saltillo floor-part of the home’s roots.

Before:

The kitchen use to be surrounded by a wall with walk-in pantries, but it was not accessible and left the homeowners with not enough space. This outdated and unappealing kitchen was ready for a huge change.

After:

To fix the problem of the pantry being inaccessible, pantry storage was added into the kitchen cabinetry. Removing the pantry wall allowed for a more open and welcoming design.

The homeowners love to entertain and have children, so they are always hosting guests! This is why such a large island was incorporated into the design. Another reason for the large island is because they wanted a large work zone. The husband loves to cook, so he wanted a sink and stove in the same vicinity for functional food prep space.

The combination of two cabinet door styles partnered with a dark stain and added detail through a finish technique is what makes this kitchen such a standout. The base cabinets are Wellborn’s Premier Series Rose Hall Square and the Wall cabinets are Wellborn’s Premier Series Rose Hall Arch. The cabinetry is Maple and finished with a Sienna stain and Charcoal glaze. Character is added to the cabinetry with an Olde World finish technique which consists of burnishing, rub thru, small dents, worm holes, dry brush glazing, carved edges, medium dents and rasping.

Pet Lovers: Create a Unique Space or Your Four-Legged Friends

Keep you pets in mind next time you make a home improvement, and give them the space they deserve!

Are four-legged friends part of your family? Most of the time they are treated as if they are, so don’t they deserve a space to call their own? People make decisions on building and remodeling all of the time; however, most often the four-legged family members are not included in the plans. What if you could create a design that included pet friendly features that are not only beautiful but functional as well? Cabinetry is a wonderful way to provide pet friendly function to any room. There are three categories to keep in mind when integrating your pet into the design of your next home improvement. Pets, like humans, need a place to be bathed, to sleep, and to eat. These are three spaces that can easily be incorporated into rooms of your home while disguising their purpose.

Bathing

Whether your dog is large or small, having a space to keep them clean is a necessity for year round grooming. Also, by giving them their own space, you are no longer having to fork up your sink or bathtub. One perfect place to include a pet grooming area is the laundry room. This is a room that is often hidden to guests and lacks carpet, which makes it the ideal place for bathing animals.

Sleeping

It’s pretty common that pets have their own bed, but is it just lying out in the living room floor? Why not incorporate an area for their bed to stay out of the way and in a pleasing aesthetic? A living/entertainment space or the kitchen is perfect for getting dogs and cats out of the way and in their own cozy corner!

Feeding

Our four-legged friends have to eat just like humans! Create them an area for their food and water bowls to stay where they are out of the way of daily commotion. Feeding stations are perfect for the kitchen, laundry room, and other rooms of the home.

Cabinetry is a wonderful way to provide storage for all rooms and all needs, including pets, while making a room look spectacular. Although including animals in the plan can sometimes take a little customization, with Wellborn Cabinet, Inc.’s You Draw It Program, nearly anything is possible! No matter the size or personality of your fur baby, you are sure to find just what makes them happy!

Do your pets a favor and keep them in mind when building your home or doing your next remodel. For more ideas on how you can include your pet in the design of your home, go to www.wellborn.com.
