I’ve always been a bit of a neat freak. The first thing I do when I move into a new place is add organizing accessories. Given how popular these products have become and how many client homes I’ve designed with them, I know I’m not alone.

Before I started writing my book about the links between your home and your health last year, I never really thought about organization as a wellness topic. But in sharing its tremendous potential to make life easier and more convenient, I realized how much having an organized home frees you up for more family time, more recreation time and more ‘me’ time in so many different ways.

Organizers add functionality to our lives and functionality is one of the Five Facets of Wellness Design! Here’s how they become wellness design tools around our homes.

Kitchen Organization

This is often the hardest-working room in the house – especially when everyone is preparing more healthy meals at home.

  • If all of your cooking tools are well-organized in cabinet accessories near your cooktop and ovens or range, that’s going to make them easier to find and reach when you need them.
  • If your dishes, glasses and silverware are stored in organizers near the dishwasher or eating area, that makes unloading your dishwasher or setting the table quicker, leaving more time for family and self-care.
  • Pull-out accessories in pantry cabinets can help with storing healthy essentials in the most accessible way possible to promote healthy eating and reduce shopping trips.

Best of all, the more organized your busy kitchen is, the fewer objects family members need to touch to find the one they need. That reduces the number of germs spread by surface contact.

A well-organized kitchen makes meal prep easier and more convenient for busy households.

Entryway Organization

An organized home entry means getting out of the house faster and more stress-free on hectic days, and makes coming home healthier too.

  • Each family member can have his or her own storage locker to hold bags, coats, sports gear and other necessities. This makes it easier to have everything ready when it’s time to dash and eliminates trip hazards.
  • Having a place near your home’s entry to store everyone’s shoes means not tracking outside dirt and debris throughout your living space.
  • Expanding storage capacity for non-perishables reduces trips to the store; that’s both a time-saver and reduced opportunity for bringing any germs home.

Entry storage makes comings and goings faster, less stressed and healthier.

Pet Organization

Pets contribute to our overall well-being, and they can benefit from wellness features too.

  • If we have a spot for dog or cat bowls away from the kitchen, there’s less chance of our fur babies getting stepped on – or someone tripping over them, a more common occurrence than you’d imagine.
  • If our trash cans can be rolled into cabinets when not in use, it reduces the chance of an emergency vet visit because a pet ate something dangerous.
  • Having a suitable pet washing station means less stress on them (and us). It can also add ergonomics to this task.
  • Having their prescriptions, flea powder and other health products close at hand adds convenience to your pet parenting routines.

Pets add wellness to our lives, and organizers make pet parenting easier, safer and healthier.
