Our Emerald "Color of the Year" Tribute
Award Winning "Family Farm" Kitchen from Bob Burmeister
As we continue our tribute to our past Design Contest Winners our next post features the work of Bob Burmeister (Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry) the 2011 Large Kitchen (>42 sq ft of Countertops) Design Winner and the kitchen used in our Dream Kitchen Makeover Campaign for the Fall of 2012.
So sit back and enjoy the work of Bob Burmeister!
When the owners built their vacation home in 2009, they wanted to add modern touches while still remaining true to the home’s location on the family’s farm in the country.
The design of the cabinetry complements the house’s Craftsman style with massive posts and arching beams.
The selected finishes of painted sage green and distressed midnight black are true to the design and add to the “lived – in” quality.
The one of a kind characteristics come not just from the cabinet style, but also from the bead board, seeded glass door inserts and carved turnings.
The hammered copper sinks with reverse-hammered stars add to the natural theme.
The layout is very user friendly, while still excellent for family dinners and entertaining with the curved raised seating area.
Random distressed wood plank flooring, iron cabinet pulls, 2×2 slate mosaic backsplash, timber beamed wood ceiling, and natural stone countertops are true to the architecture of the home.
The industrial lighting and professional style stainless steel Thermador range top, Thermador double ovens, and Sharp microwave drawer add to the home’s modernized appeal.
Other appliances are fully integrated and hidden behind matching wood cabinet panels. These include the Thermador 36” French door refrigerator, warming drawer and dual dishwashers.
The intelligent mix of modern and past elements create a timeless space to be shared and loved by all for years to come! Breath-taking work Bob!

2011 Design Contest Winner for Small Kitchen Design from Maggie Burns
In celebration of our 3rd Design Contest currently in progress (ending June 2013) the Wellborn Blog will be featuring past design winners up until the new winners have been introduced!
Drum Roll please………
Our first post is from the 2011 Small Kitchen (<42 sq. ft. of CounterTops) Design Winner, Maggie Burns with her classy Milan Maple entry. Enjoy!
Design Statement:
The small kitchen in this home felt cut off from the main living area. It had a large refrigerator that blocked easy movement and reduced countertop workspace.
The client’s main goals were to add seating for four, integrate the kitchen with the living room, and create a fun modern space to entertain in. To help with his budget he wanted to reuse his appliances and keep the wood floors that ran continuous throughout the home.
We enlarged the opening to the living area, and added a cast glass eating bar that opened into both spaces.
With overhangs on two sides, up to four can be seated at one time.
The glass is light and reflective without feeling heavy or blocking in the small space.
The quartz countertops were specified with a 3” mitered edge, which also reinforced the thick proportions of the stainless trim doors and floating shelves.
Next, the refrigerator was shifted from the middle of the work area, where it blocked movement and used up valuable counter space, to one end of the existing pantry. We reconfigured the pantry and added a new frosted glass French door, which tied in with the satin glass cabinet doors.
Although the client wanted a modern look, he wanted it to feel warm and inviting, not cold or sterile. He selected Milan Maple cabinets with the Shadow finish. Stainless accents on the vertical hinge and tambour cabinets played off the stainless steel apron sink and cabinet pulls. An Oceanside tile blend that had both gray and amber iridescent glass tiles went to the ceiling on the back wall. The once off center window was balanced with floating shelves creating a dramatic look for this focal wall.
Specialty organizational items such as lazy susans, roll out trays, pull out waste baskets, and cutlery dividers help make this small kitchen function as well as it looks.

Leftover Love – the continuation of the great meal. Part I
This week is Thanksgiving and each Thanksgiving we have tons of “leftovers” and I never plan ahead to make sure my crew has their share for the week. This year is different! I have been on a quest to find every type of unique container that will hold enough food so my oven doesn’t have to come back on until Sunday and every recipe idea possible.
Extreme yes!
But also very important! Enjoy!

Sitting Pretty!
You have your new island, peninsula, breakfast nook or getaway!
You have bookmarked thousands of bar stools sites and pinned all the bar stools in the universe but you just can’t seem to make a decision on the right stool for your space.
Well I have compiled some tips and pictures to help you a little with the decision making process!
First and foremost three things: You will probably repurchase stools before other furniture; consider the space itself and the users of the space! Bar stools tend to take more abuse than any other sitting furniture in the home so don’t be alarmed if you find yourself wanting new stools – sooner after the purchase than expected!
Depending on your space and users you might even want to mix materials and heights to create a space that works for all that use your space but also is your style alone!
Mixing Heights is a great Way to add Interest & allows more people to use your kitchen space! Counter & Table Height Shown Here

Tip #1: To ensure just the right bar stools begin by measuring the height of your counter, bar, or table.
Tip #2: Allow between 10 to 12 inches between the bar stool seat and the bottom of the counter or bar.
This will ensure that your bar stool fits under the counter, bar or table and leaves you with plenty of leg room.
Tip #3: Stool & Bar Heights Guide
24-inch Bar Stool: 24″ stools are the perfect height for a 36″ bar.
26-inch Bar Stool: 26″ stools are the perfect height for a 38″ bar.
30-inch Bar Stool: 30″ stools are the perfect height for the standard 42″ bar/counter top.
Tip #4
There should be about 26-30 inches between the centers of each bar stool.
This gives people enough personal space. When you factor this in with the length of your island, peninsula or table, you will know how many bar stools you can have in that space.
It is also important to think about all the activities that will be occurring in this space!
SPACE is so IMPORTANT!
Material Types of Bar Stools
Wood bar stools – (buy wood touch up)
Metal (Steel, brushed steel, chrome, iron) bar stools
Leather, Suede, Vinyl, Micro-fiber, Stain-Resistant Fabrics or non-upholstered (How do you clean?)
Back or Back-less bar stools
Arm or arm-less bar stools
Adjustable, swivel, tilt or fixed bar stools (Do you need child friendly?)
So many types of materials to choose from remember to first consider the style of your space and where the bar stools will be used.
When it comes to the style of your space – just one simple question:
Do you want the stools to complement the space? or Stand Alone?
Remember bar stools can be great accent furniture pieces not just a place to sit!
