Designing an island of your dreams has never been easier. Cabinets + Imagination = Island of your Dreams.
Islands can be Permanent or Mobile
They can be Big or Small
You can create Workspaces or Display Spaces
I truly believe that islands in the kitchen are the norm – if you’ve got the space you might just need an island. I love islands a lot – Why?
Islands are the new kitchen tables of our generation!
Work, Eat, Cook, Play everything happens there and they are available in different heights, colors, shapes, sizes, storage options, etc….. You can design an island to meet the needs of your family – whatever they may be.
You can design your island your way and it’s the best place to add that “little bit of punch” that you want for your kitchen without shocking the family too much! It’s your personality on display!
We gather photos on Houzz daily to find the Wellborn Cabinet creations by you – creative designs for your clients, beautiful work that we would love to share. (We’ve also thrown in a few of our designs as well.) Enjoy.
What’s Your Wood Specie Style?
Hardwoods provide a tremendous selection of grain patterns, color variations, and textures, ranging from the bold statements of American red oak, hickory and character maple to the more subdued patterns of cherry and maple. Because no two trees are exactly alike, cabinets crafted from hardwood will have subtle variations in color and grain. These variations serve to enhance the beauty of each piece of Wellborn cabinetry crafted with these hardwoods. Which is why Wellborn Cabinet Inc., is one of the few remaining manufacturers who continues to use solid wood in our Premier Series raised panel doors and drawer fronts.
Cabinetry Door Styles can be constructed out of many different substrates:
Wood, MDF (medium density fiberboard), metal, plastic or a combination of any of those to create your signature cabinetry look.
Maple wood is creamy-white to light reddish-brown finely textured wood featuring straight grain and distinctive marks, such as bird’s-eye, fiddle back, mineral streaks and curly grain patterns.
Maple is a very popular choice for home cabinetry, office cabinetry, and flooring.
Maple can be stained, painted and distressed. Maple looks marvelous in all types of interior styles, depending upon the door style or finish.
Unique characteristics are brought out by randomly occurring, variously sized knots, pin holes, worm holes and tracks, gum and bark pockets, sugar tracks, heartwood and mineral streaks.
Cluster knots and open knots could also be a feature. The amount of character marks will vary from each piece of wood making each kitchen unique.
American Red Oak
Wellborn’s Prestige Oak is Live Sawn from the heart of Authentic American red oaks. It features selected subtle uniform grains with straighter grain patterns and limited very narrow cathedrals. Prestige Oak is both durable and lasting.
Cherry is synonymous with luxury. The rich red highlights give the wood a distinctive appearance. Cherry will occasionally have tiny pin knots, pitch pockets and very small, dark streaks of gum.
Emphasized by randomly occurring various sized knots, pitch pockets and small streaks of gum. Cluster knots and open knots could also be a feature. The amount of character will vary from each door making each kitchen unique.
Hickory has distinctive contrasting colors from light to dark and strong grain characteristics. The texture of hickory is open grained. Hickories by nature are heavy, hard, strong and stiff – producing durable cabinets. Hickory is for homeowners desiring dramatic wood characteristics.
The next post will cover other substrates such as Laminate, Thermofoil, Metal and MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard).

I am part of a “NKBA” group on Linkedin and a discussion is going on right now: “What colors are trending right now in kitchens?” And hands down White is the color of choice – all shades of white! From warm to bright, glaze to no glaze, cream to antique, and the list goes on and on. Certain key points were made that I would like to share with you – I found some excellent Wellborn Cabinet Designs from our dealers and designers on Houzz to illustrate what is going on right now!
- Clean lines, simple door styles with a modern feel while delicate hints of “personal style” are still scattered through-out the spaces.
- Use color on islands and certain “special” cabinets for that unique pop of color.
- Painted White with Glazing is still strong in certain markets.
- Gray has been coined as the new “White” or “Neutral”. Stay tuned in 2014 for more “gray” from Wellborn Cabinet.
The color has been surfacing as an increasingly talked-about color in home finishes lately. And I have a few ideas why.
To its credit, grey gives a softer-than-white contrast from the bold power choices of turquoise and yellow that are trending as popular in home decor and maybe we’re looking for calmer, relaxing hues to surround our family’s hearth.
Whatever the reason, designers are looking at grey as an increasingly popular choice for home finishes. And the product designers are giving us more options when it comes to the shades of grey. At the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, Wellborn showcased their new shades of grey including Willow.
While some designers say ‘grey is the new white,’ it’s not exactly taking over white in market share or popularity. But it’s a hue that might be perfect as a backdrop for your next remodeling project.
